Keyword search - our ultimate discovery:
When looking for a particular Internet site for cars, you may typically write keywords like “cheap used cars” into the search box of Google and Yahoo etc. But how does this then help you find the right web site? It works like this: All car dealers with web sites in your country will have already registered their sites with various major search engines, and the millions of words from their web sites have been stored away into their massive computers.

So when you press the ENTER key of your search engine, your Search Engine will use lightning speed to look up which words within the countless number of web sites in your country have the closest match to your keywords “cheap used cars”. However, as the search engine’s doing the word-match, it also applies a certain bias to the web site URL’s (i.e. www.xyz.com), and the web site title lines and the search words in other parts of all relevant web sites. Finally it also applies a complex formula to stop web sites from spamming, e.g. by writing 100’s of “cheap used cars” keywords into their web site to try to attract more customers. It spends just under 1-second “crunching” the billions of words in all related web sites, and working through its complex rating formulas, it’ll then bring up a list of web sites (on its first few pages) that it considers have the closest match to your search criteria “cheap used cars”. Those will be the lucky ones who may get your business on pages 1 & 2, the rest will miss out because you may never see them on pages 3, 4 or 5 etc!

Key search words: Therefore when you write a web site, it is absolutely critical that you use exactly the same search words (and search phrases) that searching customers normally use. But WHAT are they? In our quest to find the answer to that important question, we were surprised to discover that every internet search word that is being typed into every PC around the world is actually being stored away (not deleted) for future reference by Web Search Engines. This huge treasure store of trillions and trillions of words is generally called keywords.

Our original mistakes: The monumental mistake that we made in our first web site designs is for us to have been stupid enough to assume that we knew exactly what keysearch words that our potential customers would use to search for our types of products and services. WRONG – Big Mistake No 1. Our first sites were next to useless in attracting web-searching customers, we got a miserable 2-3% improvement in ebusiness. Therefore the time and money that we spent on those web sites was a complete waste!

Then, we finally thought we had found the answer, we found an Internet site that gave us information on what keywords that customers were using Internationally. We jumped onto this and “wove” these heavily into our next Australian web site. We got a 10% improvement in business from searching customers, we thought that’s great. But we didn’t realize that’s nowhere near as good as it gets, we had assumed that English-speaking people use exactly the same search words in every country around the Globe. WRONG – Big Mistake No 2. Our subsequent research showed that each English speaking country used its own unique types of search words (and search phrases) to describe different products/services.

We finally made the ULTIMATE discovery, we found a NEW, hi-tech Internet program that gave us the means to “dig” into the search engines’ massive data bases and to extract only the wording that people from a certain country use. Our country of interest was Australia. At first we were a little skeptical about using Australian stats exclusively because we thought that Aussie customers were not using the web as much as overseas customers. We did some further research and found, to our astonishment, that over 750,000 Australians (out of a population of only 20-million) now search for “car” related references every month. We found that similar, massive figures also apply to other popular products and services. It appears that this web search phenomenon is now being repeated in most countries around the Globe.

Therefore, from those figures, one can see that Internet searches have made a meteoritic rise in the last few years, to the stage where they’re now one of the biggest (if not the biggest) reference source around the world. Therefore we reasoned that, if more and more people were beginning to search the Internet for the goods and services that we provide, we quickly needed a web site that was a lot more efficient at attracting customers so that we could get “our share of the pie” before our future customers slowly started disappearing to our competitors with better web sites than our’s.

The fact that we could now access the unique, country-isolated keyword data base was truly mind-blowing for us, it was just like standing behind millions of people in our own country, and looking over their shoulders to see exactly which words and phrases potential customers were using to search for every type of product and service. Access to this latest information became our ultimate business intelligence tool, because it allowed us to find what words people were actually using (not what we guessed they were using).

Remarkably, this new keyword program now allows you to search the complete data base of words stored specifically for the United States only, or Australia only, or United Kingdom only, or Denmark only, or France only, or Italy only, or Estonia only, or the Netherlands only. We found that the data base for the United States words had good application for broad, International web marketing. Therefore if you were marketing only within Australia, you would use only Oz words, however if you were marketing Internationally from an English speaking country, you would include the search words from your own country + the U.S. This gives you an unbeatable lead on your competitor’s websites.
