Congratulations on considering starting your own small business, you will certainly have a very exciting time ahead of you. But beware, there’s an old saying “The foundation is the most important step in building a house” and the foundation for your business is certainly no exception to this rule. You will need to first ensure that the ground structure for your proposed business is firm and secure before you start building on it, or else your business may topple-over.

Many years ago I was “in your shoes” and was wondering where to turn for guidance and information on starting my own small business (which this whole website now describes). Statistics told me that up to 75% of all new small businesses will go broke within the first 12-months; I thought “No way, I’m smarter than that”. You guessed it - I was almost one of those stats.

I was an Electrical Engineer, and wanted to work from a home office, doing an Energy Efficiency Consultancy business in Sydney, Australia which I could market to homes and businesses to help reduce their electricity/gas bills (see subject tabs above and my website: www.energyconservation.com.au). Like most people in my situation who want to start their own business, I knew my work, but I was NOT an experienced businessman and therefore had very little idea about how to actually start a business.

For guidance I tried my friends, I tried local business associations, I tried mentoring programs, I tried local college courses and I tried the many Government business help agencies. I got heaps of information, but unfortunately much of it was contradictory and absolutely none of it was even 50% complete for my needs. I quickly realised that there was NO all-encompassing local or International book that covered all the information that I needed for starting my small business.

After what seemed to me like an eternity of chasing up business-starting information (on NO wages and with my wife supporting me), I finally sat, holding my head at my home desk. Laying before me was an absolute MOUNTAIN of letters, leaflets, notes and other information to sort through. Days later I had finally worked it all into some sort of starting plan and began acting on it over a period of time (hopefully doing the right thing).

The whole thing took me so long that I almost went broke in the process. I FINALLY landed a couple of clients who FINALLY paid their invoices. Hooray, I was then able pay off my immediate debts, before I could even think of making a profit to pay my wages. It took me around 12-months until I actually started to turn any sort of a profit at all.

I remember thinking to myself then “Surely there has GOT to be a better way than this!” Someone out there needs to write a simple book that can advise people how to start making a decent profit in a MUCH SHORTER time!
