Coaching Mini Soccer Teams

Coaching Sub-Junior Soccer Teams - Soccer Coaching & Soccer Training

My difficult experiences in coaching sub-junior soccer teams made me determined to one day make it a lot easier for others – therefore the book – Coaching mini soccer teams.

This new International book suits new coaches (or existing coaches) wishing to streamline their training methods for 5 – 7 year olds playing sub-junior soccer (or Mini Soccer, as it is often named).

A famous South American soccer coach once said: “A young soccer player is like a blank slate upon which the coach leaves a permanent mark”.

Numerous men (and an ever-increasing number of dedicated women) now take up the exciting challenge of coaching mini soccer teams each year, world-wide …… that adds up to an awful lot of marks on that slate. Whether those marks are good or bad may depend entirely on you, the coach.

A long time ago I discovered that most new coaches for Mini soccer teams start off completely in the wrong direction, why? - They buy coaching books that are meant for Junior Soccer teams. It is important to note that the coaching methods for Sub-Junior soccer teams (i.e. 5 – 7 year olds), who play on half-size fields, are worlds apart to those for older, Junior soccer teams (i.e. up to 12 year old) who play on full-size fields. Mini teams need specialised coaching methods which are designed for first time players.

My first experience with sub-junior (or Mini) Teams Teams was when I was working as an Electrical Engineer in Sydney in the early 1980’s. My son had just started Kindergarten and I had booked him into the school’s Under 6’s team. Someone found out that I was on flexible working hours with the NSW Public Works Department and therefore they thought that I was an ideal target as a “temporary coach” (just until they could find someone more experienced). Yep, you guessed it, there wasn’t a mad stampede for the job, and I was still coach when my boy started secondary school 7-years later.

When I first took on my team of “littlies”, I had absolutely no experience with Mini Teams. My best claim to fame was one season of playing soccer with a local adults team. To make the situation even worse, our Soccer Club had absolutely nothing available on the subject of training mini soccer teams. I searched around elsewhere for simple resources and books to help me specifically with first time players, i.e. Sub-Junior or Mini teams. However absolutely none were available, so I did the next best thing, I bought a few Junior coaching books. But I soon discovered that these were next to useless because they were meant for older kids on full size fields, and therefore assumed that the players had already played for a couple of years.

This lack of specific resources made me determined to one day do something about the problem. Fortunately I’m now a lot older and therefore have a little more time on my hands and have produced the book “Coaching Sub-Junior Soccer Teams” which I wrote specifically, for International applications, for 5 – 7 years old, first time players, on reduced-size (mini) fields. My internet research shows that this may be the first specialised book of its kind world-wide.

My coaching methods were developed over many years of working with my own teams, from the various coaching courses that I attended, from psychology books, from successfully bring up four kids of my own, then through interaction with eight grandchildren, and through consultation with many other dads (and mums) who had been through the same coaching dilemma. The successful methods that I developed carried me through the many happy years of coaching littlies, and eventually into a secondary school “A” Grade team. The teams that I coached in the Sydney area have always figured in the top 10% of the competition ladder.

My 30-page book is designed to make your journey into coaching an easy and pleasurable one with lots of psychological tips and ideas meant for mini players, and with lots of basic practice skills designed specially for them. After this, the numerous other junior soccer books, that have always been available, will assist you when your “battle-seasoned” squad finally braves that BIG, full-size field as 8-year olds.
